My new book ‘Mr Collins in Love: A Pride and Prejudice inspired m/m romance’ is out now!
The story is told from the point of view of young clergyman, Mr Collins, the character from Pride and Prejudice who is generally considered to be one of the most odious characters in English literature.
I reckon Jane Austen completely misunderstood him.
Mr Collins in Love features:
- Autistic Regency clergyman
- His gardener
- Friends to lovers
- One sex scene (no touching)
- Excellent boiled potatoes.

My book starts a few months before the action in Pride and Prejudice. I also stick very closely to the relevant plot points in Austen’s masterpiece, to ensure that Mr Collins’ actions are the same in both. But my book is about him; his priorities, his story. For example, Elizabeth Bennet doesn’t appear in my book, because she’s not that important to him (sorry to fans of Lizzie everywhere, but it’s true!).
My book contains one sex scene in which the characters don’t touch. One character doesn’t even look at the other. A reader described it as “the most indecent scene I have ever read” which makes me happy.
The book is novella length (46,000 words). Early reviews say it’s a satisfying read that’ll give you all the feels.
You might enjoy Mr Collins in Love more if you’re familiar with Pride and Prejudice, but it’s not necessary to have read it or seen the movie.
What other people are saying:
“A deeply kind retelling. I loved the warmth, the wisdom, and the way it offers a realistic but profound happy-ever-after to people who rarely get such a thing in romance.” – KJ Charles, author of The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen.
“I didn’t think anyone could make me love Mr Collins, but Lee Welch has done it with this beautifully written story. Jem’s Blackbird comes to life in all his sweet awkwardness, and I couldn’t love him more if I tried.” – Lily Morton, author of My Darcy, On Circus Lane, and the Finding Home series.
“Very few romance writers can pull this off – to take a character so universally despised and ridiculed and write a novella in which you fell in love with him. Wow, just wow.” – Bookshire Cat on Bluesky
