Who doesn’t love an evil sorcerer? He’ll have the coolest lair, the most dramatic clothes and, of course, magic. Not to mention quick wits, political acumen, a devilish beard and, if we’re lucky, a penchant for glaring.
At least a million times sexier and more interesting (to me, anyway) than the young clean-cut hero type.
Seducing the Sorcerer, my latest m/m fantasy romance book, was born of my abiding love of the clever, scheming, (often) queer-coded, bad guy everyone loves to hate.

I wanted to play with the ‘what if the villain is really the hero?’ trope, without making my sorcerer too perfect, because there have to be REASONS some people would hate or distrust him. So, while Morgrim, the court sorcerer in my book, is one of the heroes—he’s fiercely principled, kind, clever, well-educated, brave and sexy—he’s also a ruthless scheming liar who isn’t above using people to get what he wants.
So that’s the sorcerer. Now for the seduction bit.
I don’t know about you, but I tend to think of sorcerers as the seducers, rather than the seducees.
But much as I love tropes, I don’t love all the tropes all the time. Surely half the fun of archetypes is getting to smash them or at least mix them up a little?
So, I wondered, what kind of man could seduce a man like Morgrim?
My other hero, Fenn, is the narrator of the book. Fenn thinks of himself as a plain sort of bloke. He used to work as a head groom in a big stable, but developments in magic mean hardly anyone in the book keeps horses any more. Fenn’s out of a job. He’s homeless, desperate and ragged, and he drinks too much when he can afford to. He’s not particularly well-educated and he doesn’t know a lot about politics.
He may not sound like your typical romance hero either, but it’ll take a special kind of man to win Morgrim’s heart. And Fenn has many admirable qualities. He’s kind, he’s got grit and humour, he loves horses with his whole being and he’s easily as principled and clever as Morgrim.
Of course, it’s magic that throws Fenn into Morgrim’s path. And it’s magic that nearly tears them apart as well.
But in the meantime, there’s seduction. But Fenn’s no smooth-talking casanova. He’ll be writing no love poems, singing no serenades. He won’t be buying flowers or whispering sweet nothings.
So how will he go about seducing Morgrim?
Well, you’ll have to read the book to find out…
